Text of Freedom Document
I William Pleasants of Powhatan County in Virginia being fully persuaded in my own mind that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and having in my possession three negroes to wit, Ben aged about nineteen years, Jacob seventeen years, Selah fifteen years. I do declare that Ben and Jacob shall be free when they arrive to the age of twenty one years, and Sela to the age of eighteen years without interruption from me or by an person claiming for by from or under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3rd day of the eighth month, in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred & eighty nine.

At a court held for Powhatan County at Scottville the 15th day of October 1789. This deed of emancipation from William Pleasants to sundry slaves within mentioned, was presented in court and proved by the affirmation of Samuel Parsons and John Hunnicutt and was by the court ordered to be recorded.
