To all who these presents shall come. Know ye, that I John Maxey of Powhatan County do believe “That all men are by nature equally free and independent”. Therefore from a clear conviction of the injustice and criminality of depriving my fellow creatures of their natural right do hereby set free the following persons viz. Patt & Jenny to be free the 25th of Dec 1789, Aggy to be free the 25th of Dec 1794, Judith to be free Dec the 25th 1796, Lubee & Jacob to be free Dec 25th 1798, Nancy to be free the 25th of December 1799, Sampson to be free the 25th of December 1800, Hannah and Joe to be free the 25th of Dec 1801, Lucky to be free Dec the 25th 1803, Jack to be free Dec the 25th 1804, Sylvia to be free the 25th of Dec 1805, William to be free the 25th of Dec 1806, Cate to be free the 25th of Dec 1807, Patt and Milly to be free the 25th of December 1808, Zechariah to be free the 25th of Dec 1809.
I do hereby relinquish all right, title and claim to the said people after they arrive to the dates above mentioned & not before. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 18th day of Dec. 1788.

At a Court held for Powhatan County at Scottville on Thursday the eighteenth day of December 1788. This deed of emancipation from John Maxey to sundry slaves within named was presented in court and acknowledged by the said John Maxey and ordered to be recorded.
