Know all men by these presents that I Robert Carter of the County of Fauquier in the State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid, as well as for divers other causes and considerations me thereunto moving hath manumitted and set free forever my slave named Thomas King who is a negro man aged about forty years and I do by these presents forever manumit and set free him the said Thomas King and release him from bondage and service to me and my heirs, executors and administrators forever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of May 1857.

Clerk’s office of Fauquier County Court May 8th 1857
This deed of manumission from Robert Carter to Thomas King was proved in said office by the oaths of French Glascock Jr. and Hiram Glascock the subscribing witnesses thereto and admitted to record.
