To all whom it may concern be it known that whereas I Giles Fitzhugh of Fauquier County in the State of Virginia did heretofore on the first day of January, Anno Domino one thousand eight hundred and forty, in consideration of her fidelity and good conduct and other good causes me thereunto moving, manumit and set free from slavery my negro woman named Suckey or Susan Gordon alias Stewart, and whereas the evidence of said manumission is not deemed to be sufficient for that purpose. Now this instrument witnesseth that I the said Giles in consideration of the premises and of the sum of five dollars current money to me in hand paid, have released from slavery, liberate, manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery, liberate, manumit and set free, my negro woman aforesaid she being a bright mulatto aged about thirty years, marked by a few scattered spots or scars caused by a burn on the instep of her right foot, and who also has a small mole on the left side of her neck and another on the collar bone on her right side, and is about five feet, three inches in height; also her two female children to wit, Mary Stewart aged five years, of a dark brown almost black color, and who has a scar under her left eye caused by a burn and Elizabeth Stewart aged two years of a bright mulatto color, and without any specific marks about her, the said Susan or Suckey and her said children the said Mary and the said Elizabeth, I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me, my executors or administrators forever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this nineteenth day of March in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty five.
