Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I, John P. Philips of the town of Warrenton, in the County of Fauquier, and State of Virginia, being fully satisfied that the mental and moral condition of my servant Sandy Shumate, who at present is living in the city of Washington, is such that his freedom would be of service to him; for and in consideration thereof, as will for divers other good causes, and considerations, me the said John P. Philips, thereunto moving, hereby these presents manumitted and set free, and do hereby forever manumit and set free him the said Sandy Shumate. And I, the said John P. Philips for my for my self, and my heirs, executors, and administrators do hereby manumit, release and deliver him the said Sandy Shumate from slavery, bondage and servitude forever, declaring him to be free, and at full liberty to pursue his own happiness and welfare as best he may. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of August 1844.
