Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Mary C. Nelson of the County of Fauquier in the Commonwealth of Virginia have for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred & sixty dollars to me in hand paid by Frank otherwise called Frank Randolph before the signing & sealing of these presents, emancipated & set free & do hereby emancipate & set free the said Frank who has been heretofore my slave so that the said Frank sometimes called Frank Randolph shall be henceforth a free man & entitled to all the privileges & rights of a free man of color, directly free from all claim by me, my executors, administrators or heirs, to render service as a slave. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this first day of March 1837.

This indenture was proved in the office by the oath of John Marshall, a subscribing witness thereto, and at a Court held for Fauquier County on the 27th day of November 1839, the same was fully proved in open court by the oath of John W. Newman the remaining subscribing witness thereto & ordered to be recorded.
