Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Enock Foley of Fauquier County and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of forty pounds current money to me in hand paid the receipt of which I hereby acknowledge and also for and in consideration of the services heretofore rendered me by negro Fanny commonly called Fanny Davis heretofore held as my slave. I the said Enock Foley do by these presents, manumit, free and set at liberty the said negro named Fanny (alias Fanny Davis) hereafter and from this date to remain free and at liberty, hereby granting to her forever all claim right and title to her services as my slave and releasing and relinquishing all control and ownership over the said Fanny, which I have heretofore claimed under the laws of Virginia. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty second day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred.
Signed sealed and delivered Enock Foley (seal)
In presence of
