Text of Freedom Document

Whereas I Matthew Brooke of Fauquier County in the State of Virginia being upwards of twenty one years of age and being legally possessed of a negro man named Billy a slave for life for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving as well as for the sum of two hundred dollars lawful money of the United States of America to me in hand well and truly paid the receipt whereof I do hereby confess and acknowledge have and by these presents do fully clearly and absolutely emancipate liberate and set free him the said Billy from slavery forever and I do hereby for my self my heirs Executors administrators and assigns remise release and forever quit claim unto him the said Billy all my right title claim and interest whatsoever as well to his person and services as to any estate he hath or may acquire hereby declaring him absolutely free from and against me and all and every person and persons claiming or to claim by from or under me. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21 day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred.

Virginia Fauquier County to wit,
I Francis Brooke clerk of the said County of Fauquier do hereby certify that Martin Pickett and Edwar Digges gentlemen the persons before whom the within power of Manumittal was acknowledged are acting magistrates for the county aforesaid and that full faith and credit ought to be given to all matters and things by them so attested as well in Courts of Justice as thereto.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of my office this twenty first day of January one thousand eight hundred and in the XXIV year of the Commonwealth.
