Know all men by these presents that I Rachael Alford as well for and in consideration of the regard which I have and bear unto Will Ashby (formerly the property of John Ashby deceased, but since his death purchased from his representatives, and duly delivered and conveyed to me in my own right) as for the further consideration of five shillings current money of Virginia to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and thereof do for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators now and forever exonerate, release and discharge the said Will Ashby from the payment of any other consideration. I the said Rachael Alford have given, granted and confirmed to the said Will Ashby and by these presents do give, grant and confirm to him forever all the right, title and interest which I had to him as a slave under the purchase aforesaid, and I do further liberate him and discharge him from any further or other services as a slave to me or any person claiming under me hereafter in as full and ample a manner as if he had been born free. Witness my hand and seal this 21st day of February 1795.

This deed of emancipation was proved to be the act and deed of the said Rachael Alford by the oaths of Joseph Blackwell and Taliaferro Shumate witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
