Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I James Shelton Jr (of color) of the County of Goochland have for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by Milly Shelton now Milly Logan wife of Harrison Logan all of color, of said County of Goochland granted, bargained & sold and set free at the age of twenty years the following females to wit. Adalade Shelton born the 15th day of June 1830 and Martha Jane Shelton born the 8th day of June 1833 also of color & children of the above named Milly Shelton before her intermarriage with said Harrison Logan & who but for this deed would not be entitled to their freedom until they should arrive to the age of thirty years, the said Milly Shelton not being thirty years old at the time of the birth of the said Adalade and Marth J Shelton, they being the children of Milly Shelton who was not entitled to freedom until she was thirty years old & to whom freedom was decreed by the Court of Appeals under the wills of John & Jonathan Pleasants dec’d the said Adalade and Martha Jane Shelton being now my property & estate.
And I do hereby emancipate and set free the said Adalade & Martha Jane Shelton upon their arrival to the age of twenty years, and from and after that time to act and do in all respects for themselves as free persons without restraint or control of any person or persons whatever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 23rd day of May 1836.

This deed of manumission was presented in court and acknowledged by James Shelton Jr. to be his act and deed, and ordered to be recorded.
