Know all men by these presents that I James Shelton a man of color of the county of Goochland for and in consideration of the natural love and affection that I have and do bear towards my children, Peyton Shelton aged twenty eight years next August, James Shelton aged twenty two the first day of next January, Anthony Shelton aged about eighteen years and Milly Howell wife of Samuel Howell aged about twenty years, and for the further consideration of one dollar to me in hand paid by my aforesaid children who formerly belonged Samuel Pleasants dec’d late of Powhatan County of whom I purchased this time the above named Milly and Anthony had to serve and I purchased the time that James had to serve from Robert Pleasants the son of said Samuel and the time that Peyton had to serve under a deed of trust executed by said Robert my four named children being entitled to their freedom respectively at the age of thirty years under a decree of the superior court of Chancery for the Richmond district, and I the said James Shelton do hereby emancipate and set free from this day my said children Peyton, Anthony, James and Milly free from the claim of myself and heirs forever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of June 1879.
