Text of Freedom Document
This indenture made this 21st day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three between James Holman of the one part and Dick a negro man slave and the property of the said James of the other part. Witnesseth that the said James Holman for an in consideration of four hundred dollars paid him by Josiah Leake, for an in behalf of the said Dick as well as for divers other causes and considerations hath hereby emancipated, liberated & set free the said Dick according to an act of the legislature in that case made & provided, and doth hereby covenant and agree for himself his heirs Exrs & Adm. that the said Dick shall enjoy all the privileges & immunities which by law free negroes are entitled to and doth also covenant that his real estate shall be subject to the payment of his debt in case of a deficiency of assets as far as may be necessary to secure the said Dick his freedom, according to the true intent & meaning of this indenture and also the said James doth bind himself, his heirs, executors, & admrs in the penalty of eight hundred dollars to Josiah Leake for & in behalf of the said Dick to defend, establish and confirm the freedom of the said Dick against the claims of all persons whatever and to do any act relative to the premises which may be required by him hereafter to complete more fully this deed of emancipation so that it may be carried fully into effect according to the true intent & meaning of the parties. In testimony whereof the said James Holman hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day & date above written.
