Text of Freedom Document
I John Baker of the county of Goochland being persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind, and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care a negro woman called Aggy purchased from Matthew Pleasants and now my wife, I do hereby emancipate and set free the said Aggy, she being of full age, and I do for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators relinquish all my right title interest claim of pretentions of claim whatever to her as a slave and only reserving the right I have to her as a lawful husband, she enjoying every privilege that is common for wives to enjoy under a husband. Witness my hand this 21st day of September 1801.
