To all whom these presents shall or may concern
Know ye that I Thomas Massie of the County of Goochland have and do by these presents emancipate my man slave named James alias James Barrett, and do hereby vest him with all and singular the privileges and immunities of a free born citizen as far as the law, usages, and customs of the Commonwealth will admit. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 21st day of 1794.

At a court held for Goochland County June the sixteenth 1794
William Miller and Tarlton Baker proved this deed of Emancipation in solemn form to be the act and deed of Thomas Massie which was ordered to be recorded.
