Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Walter Cousins of the County of Fluvanna and State of Virginia have manumitted emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro woman slave named Mariah and her children namely Fleming, Sarah Elizabeth, Martha Ann and Reuben Walter, the woman Mariah was purchased by me of Jesse Norris in his lifetime, and the children have all been born since the date of the purchase to wit: 20th May 1826. And I hereby declare the said woman Mariah and her four children above named to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all privileges and rights of free persons with which it is in my power to vest them. The said woman Mariah is about forty five years old of brown complexion, Fleming son is twenty one years old in November last brown complexion, Sarah Elizabeth seventeen years old in August last brown complexion, Martha Ann black complexion, thirteen years old in November last, and Reuben Walter brown complexion, thirteen years old in April last. I bought the said Mariah as a wife and the above named children are the increase of our communion as man & wife and desiring to remove to the state of Ohio where the chances of enjoying myself and securing to my children a larger share of liberty, is the inducement to the execution of this deed.
Witness my hand & seal this 15th day of April 1848.
