Text of Freedom Document

I David M. Doswell do hereby make, ordain and declare this to be my last will & testament revoking all other wills, codicils and parts of wills.
1st I will that my debts be paid.
2nd I give and bequeath my mulatto girl Mary to Doct. Richard May during his life.
3rd I emancipate Wills and Andrew when they become twenty one years old; provided they will it and the laws of this state permit, until they are then emancipated I will that my executor pay them five dollars annually and that they be and remain under the absolute control of the above named May, he to maintain and treat them humanly. And if they desire, be part to some trade, but not the carpenters.
4th I give and bequeath to sd May the five hundred pounds now in his hands & left to me in trust by my father, to him and his heirs.
5th I will that my land be rented out until Mary becomes of age and then sold on a credit of five years at the direction of my executor.
6th I will that little Maria now in Kentucky be sold; also my crop, stock, furniture and utensils of every kind, except my spotted horse, which horse I give to Willis & Andrew.
7th After my debts are paid, I will that the land money arising from the sale thereof be divided in this way to wit, one half I give to the said May and his heirs; the other half I will that my executors pay to Willis, Andrew & Mary in equal proportion on they days they respectively become free.
8th I give and bequeath to the above named May the balance of my estate of every description including all debts and legacies due on which money became due. And I also constitute him my sole executor. Done this 12th of September 1835, witness my hand and seal.

At a court held for Prince Edward County October the 19th 1835. This last will and testament of David M. Doswell dec’d was presented in court and proved by the oaths of John H. Byaper and Edward Irvin two witnesses thereto ordered that the same be recorded. On the motion of Richard May executors herein named, he with William T. Wootten, Reuben H. [?Dizasmith?] and William H Wood his securities entered into, and acknowledged their bond for the purpose in the penalty of ten thousand dollars, conditioned according to law, and took the oath required by law, certificate for obtaining a probate thereof in due form is granted him.
