Know all men by these presents that I Nelly a free woman of colour for and in consideration for the love which I entertain for my husband Nelson (who is my property as [illegible] by a deed of record in the County Court of Amelia) to gather for and in the further consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by the said Nelson the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, I the said Nelly have this day emancipated and set free the said Nelson, and I do hereby declare that by virtue of these presents, the said Nelson is to all intents and purposes as absolutely free as if he had been born so and all authority and ownership which I may have heretofore had of and to the said Nelson, is hereby declared to be as absolutely void as if the same had never existed- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first written.
