Text of Freedom Document
I William Johnson of Amelia County being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care two negroes of the following name & ages viz. James twenty one years Esther eighteen, I hereby emancipate and set free the above named slaves & do for myself my heirs Executors & Administrators relinquish all my right title interest & claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever either to their persons or to any estate they may hereafter acquire and having under my care one negro of the following name & age viz. Richard twenty years old whom I also emancipate & set free and do for my self my heirs Executors & administrators relinquish all my right title interest & claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever either to his person or to any estate he may hereafter acquire after he shall attain to the age of twenty one years, when he the said negro is to enjoy his freedom in as full & ample a manner as if he had been born of free parents without any interruption from me or any person claiming for by from or under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of January 1783.
