I Thomas Walthall of Amelia County in Virginia being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind & that it is my duty to do unto others as would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care a negro boy named Joe aged about sixteen years who I have heretofore held as a slave I hereby emancipate and set free the said Joe yet I believe it right for me to reserve the prerogative of acting as a guardian over him until he arrives to the age of twenty one years, and I do for myself my heirs Executors and Administrators relinquish all my right, title, interest and claim or pretensions of claim whatsoever either to his person or to any estate he may acquire after he shall attain to the age aforesaid which will be on the 28th day of the 2 month in the year 1787 then to have his full freedom without any interruption from me or any person claiming for, by from or under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty second day of the seventh month in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty two.
