Know all men by these presents that I Margaret A. Crawford of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Robert Napper a free man of colour, the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge have manumitted and set free from slavery and do hereby manumit and set free from slavery my negro woman Matilda the wife of the said Robert, a bright mulatto of large size, with a scar on the right arm near the wrist aged about forty five years, and her female child Margaret also a mulatto aged about six years.
And I do hereby give grant and release unto the said Matilda and her child, Margaret aforesaid and their future increase all my right title and claim of, in and to their persons, labour and services and of in and to all the estate and property which they may hereafter acquire or obtain. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 5th day of January in the year 1859.

Crawford Executrix & Devisee as aforesaid to be her act and deed and is together with this certificate admitted to record.
