Know all men by these presents that I Jacob Keiser recently of the County of Augusta, but now of the County of Roanoke in the State of Virginia, for & in consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by Willis Crawford, a negro man aged thirty six years, I Jacob Keiser do hereby liberate said negro from slavery forever – witness the following signature & seal the 22nd of September in the year 1856.

Augusta County to wit
I Wm Chapman for the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia, do hereby certify that Jacob Keiser whose name is affixed to the above writing bearing date 22nd Sept 1856 personally appeared before me in my county aforesaid & acknowledged the above writing to be his act & deed, & desired me to certify said acknowledgment to the County Court of Augusta in order that said negro Willis Crawford may be [illegible] as a free negro & receive free papers, with a [illegible] to his removing to one of the free states.
Given under my hand the 22nd day of September 1856.

This Deed of Emancipation from Jacob Keiser to Willis Crawford was presented in court & being acknowledged by said Keiser before a Justice of the Peace is with his certificate admitted, ordered to be recorded.
