This deed made the 23rd day of March in the year of our Lord 1855 by James Cooper of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia, witnesseth that the said James Cooper in consideration of two hundred and eighty seven dollars and fifty cents, doth manumit and set free his slave Louis Johnston, aged fifty seven years, the said Louis is five feet ten inches in height, is of a dark colour, nearly quite black, is quite bald, has a large scar on the fore part of his head, a little above the forehead, and the little finger of his right hand is stiff and crooked- said Louis is stoutly built of robust make.

I Archer M Moore a Justice of the Peace in and for said county of Augusta, do hereby certify that James cooper, part to the writing, dated as above the 23rd day of March 1855, and whose name is signed hereto, hath acknowledged the same before me, in my said county of Augusta, Given under my hand this 23rd day of March 1855.

This Deed of Emancipation from James Cooper to Louis Johnston was presented in court and being acknowledged by said Cooper before Justice of the peace for this county is with his certificate conveyed ordered to be recorded.
