Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I James P Beard of Augusta County and State of Virginia do hereby in consequence of the faithful services and virtuous conduct of my negro man Moses and also for the further consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by the said Moses by the hand of Edward Beard his next friend & the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do manumit emancipate set at liberty and full and perfect freedom give unto the said negro man (Moses) forever free from the claim or claims of my heirs executors and administrators and all and every other person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this the 25th day of December 1849.

Augusta County to wit
We Smauel D Crawford and James W Stuart in the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that James P Beard part to the above instrument of writing dated December 25 1849 and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Augusta in order that it may be recorded.

This deed of emancipation from James P Beard to his negro man slave Moses was presented in court and being acknowledged by said James P Beard before two justices of the peace for this county is with the certificate of said Justices thereon endorsed ordered to be recorded.
