Know all men by these presents that I Polly Bell of the county of Augusta and State of Virginia availing myself of the privilege extended by an act of the General Assembly of the said Commonwealth of Virginia to the citizens thereof owning slaves do hereby voluntarily and in consideration of the former service and meritorious conduct emancipate the slaves herein after named and described and by me the said Polly Bell heretofore held on bondage to wit Joseph aged fifty two years Hodge aged fifty years Charity aged fifty years Rose aged forty years Saul aged thirty two years Louisa twenty six Caroline twenty three Hatty Twenty one Mary twenty two James six Louisa younger aged three years Sarah Francis aged three months Hannah aged nineteen years Margarite Jane aged two years David sixteen years Delila aged twelve years Francis nine years Amy six years Henrietta two years Robert and Betsey three years Delpha one year old the said slaves above named to be hereby forever set free and discharged from all services and any and all claim or claims to services & all actions in the form of service now or at any time due to me in any manner of on any account whatsoever so that the said Joseph Hodge Charity Rose Saul Louisa Caroline Hatty Mary James Louisa the younger Sarah Francis Hannah Margarite Jane David Delila Francis Amy Henrietta Robert Betsey Delpha shall be as free to all intents as if they had been born free and this act of emancipation shall take effect and have full free form and after the date of these presents. In testimony whereof I the said Polly Bell have hereunto set my hand & seal 19th day of October 1849.

This deed of emancipation from Polly Bell to her slaves Joseph, Hodge, Charity, Rose, Saul, Louisa, Caroline, Hatty, Mary, James, Louisa the younger, Sara Francis, Hannah Margarite Jane David, Delilah Francis, Amy, Henrietta, Robert Betsey & Delpha dated the 19th day of October 1849 was presented in court and proved by the oaths of J. Crawford and Samuel M. Long the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court at Staunton this 31st day of October in the year 1849 in the 74th year of the Commonwealth.
