Will Book June the 6th 1833
Knowing that it is appointed once for all persons to die but the time when for wise reasons concealed from our knowledge and wishing to liberate my black people and also my mulattos.
I Martha F Walker of the County of Albemarle constitute this my last will and testament the two thousand dollars in the hands of Doctor man [?Pujo?] I wish to be appropriated to the purchase of the wives and youngest child of my three men Reuben, Wilson Tom and Calvert & should he chance to have wife or child that they may go with their husband. Any of this money that may be left I wish to be equally divided among my slaves to take them to some place where they may enjoy their liberty. I also leave them for the same purpose all monies due for hire after paying the Doctors; should this not be enough they must be hired out to raise a sufficient sum. I wish in Duke to retain in his hands one thousand dollars and to pay my sister Mildred T Goolsby of Kentucky the interest yearly and at her death to divide the money between her children and their heirs. The other thousand dollars in his hands I leave him on the condition that liberates Jessy to go with his wife support the old woman Phillis during her life and Jesse and her grand children so long as may be necessary for hem to remain in this state. To Martha Rice I leave my watch and to Elizabeth Rice the chain belonging to it. I constitute Richard Duke my executor and the Guardian and protector of my slaves my bedding and furniture with the exception of a table to Elizabeth Duke chest of drawers to Ann Rice to my sister Elizabeth F Michel the table to E Michel during her life. Codicil to the foregoing will. It is my will and desire that the sum of three hundred dollars that I authorized Richard Duke to college to purchase a carriage shall be given to Dr. William Rice of Charlotte to purchase a carriage for my three nieces to wit Martha Rice, Elizabeth Rice and Ann Rice
