Deed of manumission to Israel from John Bell of Staunton, VA

This Indenture witnesseth that I John Bell of Augusta County and state of Virginia hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth Bargain and sell unto Samuel Wilson of Pendleton county and state aforesaid a Negro boy named Israel for the term of twenty one years sd. [said] boy being now Nine years of age. and in consideration of the same S. Wilson doth oblige himself his heirs &c. [etc.] to pay unto sd. Bell his heirs or assigns the sum of Forty five Pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid the recpt. [receipt] thereof he doth acknowledge. sd. Wilson to treat sd. boy in a humane manner. in testimony of these conditions we do set our hands and seals hereunto this 14th day of Nov. 1809.

At a Court of Hustings held for the Corporation of Staunton, on Monday July the 15th, 1811. This Instrument of writing from under the hand and seal of John Bell was presented in Court and acknowledged by the said Bell; and on his motion ordered to be recorded.

To all whom it may concern know ye that I John Bell of the Corporation of Staunton and State of Virginia being convinced by the Spirit of God that it is contrary to his will to keep my fellow creatures in bondage I therefore by these presents declare the within mentioned negro Boy Israel to be free from and after the expiration of the time stipulated in the within with the within named Samuel Wilson to enjoy all the priviledges of citizenship in due subordination to the laws of this Commonwealth. Given under my hand and seal this 15th day of July 1811.
