Know all men by these presents, that I Edmund Edrington of the Borough of Staunton, in the State of Virginia, for and in consideration of the meritorious services, honesty and good behavior, of my Slave, Lavinia, a mulatto woman, aged about twenty two years, have emancipated, made free and set at liberty; and by these presents, do emancipate, make free and set at liberty, the said mulatto woman slave named Lavinia, together with her four children, that is to say, her daughter Maria, about six years old, her son Gustavus Vassa, about four years old, and her two daughters, Martha Ann about three, and Nancy about One year old; to possess and enjoy all the rights and priviledges of emancipated slaves, agreeably to the existing Laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia; from the day of the date of these presents, during their natural lives. In Testimony, whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of October in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and Seventeen.

This Bill of emancipation executed by Edmund Edrington, emancipating his slaves, Lavinia and her four
children, being presented in Court, and proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto, is ordered to be recorded.
