This Deed of Emancipation made this 30th day of June, in the year of Christ One thousand eight hundred and fifty five Witnesseth that I, J.C.M. Merillat of the town of Staunton and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the past services and good character of my servant man slave Horace as well as for other good & sufficient considerations me thereunto moving, have emancipated and set at liberty and do hereby forever manumit and free my said slave Horace and from this time forth hs is to be bound to no more service to me or any one claiming under me, but is in all respects to be entitled to all and singular the privileges and rights of a freeman. And I hereby covenant that I will warrant his freedom against the claims of all persons whomsoever claiming under, through or by me.

State of Virginia Town of Staunton to wit
I Nicholas K Trout Mayor of said town in the State aforesaid certify that J.C.M. Merillat whose name is signed to the deed of Emancipation hereto annexed bearing day on the 30th day of June 1855, hath acknowledged the same before me in my town aforesaid. Given under my hand this 30 day of June 1855.

In the Clerks Office of the Court of hustings for the Town of Staunton, November 30 1855
This deed of Emancipation from J.C.M. Merillat to Horace, was this day presented in the office aforesaid, and, with the certificate of acknowledgement annexed, is admitted to record.

The acknowledgement of this deed being duly reported to court was ordered to be entered into the minutes
