Know all men by these presents that I Reuben Howard of Rockbridge County Virginia, from motives of benevolence and from natural love and affection, have manumitted and set free from slavery, and do hereby manumit, and set free from slavery my wife, a woman of color named Milly Howard, aged 48 years, together with my and her children, to wit, John, Reuben, Marcellus, males; and Mary and Martha, females. And I hereby give, grant, and release unto the said Milly and her children as aforesaid, and all her future increase, all my right, title and claim, of, in and to her persona, labor & services and to the persons, labors and services of her children aforesaid, and of, in and to all the estate and property which she or they may have hereafter acquire or obtain, except that nothing in this deed shall be continued to release the said Milly from such contract as is by law, vested in a husband over a wife, and of such services as are due from a wife to a husband; any that such of the above named children are under the age of twenty one, shall not by this deed be discharged and released from such services as are due from a minor to his parent by the law of Virginia. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and affixed my seal this 25th day of May 1863.
