Know all men by these presents that I Reuben Howard of Rockbridge County and State of Virginia, for an in consideration of natural love and affection, and from motives of benevolence, have manumitted and set free from slavery my son, a man of color, named William O. Howard, aged twenty two years & ten months. And I do hereby give, grant, and release unto the said William O. Howard all my right, title and claims of, in and to his persons, labor and services and of, in and to all the estate and property which he may acquire or obtain. In testimony whereof, I the said, Reuben Howard, have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 8th day of April 1863.
