Whereas the late Hugh Adams of Rockbridge County, State of Virginia, by his last will emancipated his slave amongst whom was a negro woman named Scylla Jane, who is now the wife of my negro man, named William Haliburton, aged about thirty years. And the said Scylla Jane having purchased from me the said slave William for the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, which has been paid to me for her by the Executor of said Hugh Adams, and desired me to manumit him, the said slave William in order that he might accompany his wife Scylla Jane to the Colony of Liberia for which they will embark during the coming month. Be it therefore known to all men by these presents that I Andrew Patterson of said county in consideration of the promise & of the said sum of fifteen hundred dollars have manumitted & set free from slavery & do hereby manumit & set free from slavery my said negro man named William Haliburton aged about thirty. And I do hereby grant & release unto the said William all my right, title & claim of, in & to his person, labor & services & of & in & to all the estate & property he may hereafter acquire or obtain. In witness whereof I Andrew Patterson, have hereunto set my hand & seal this 31st day of March 1860.

I Daniel Brown a justice of the peace for the county aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do certify that Andrew Patterson, whose name is signed to the writing hereto annexed bearing date on the 31st day of March 1860, has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid.
