Whereas Jane Anne Boling a woman of colour was born the slave of John Ramsay dec’d and was brought up by me in my house from infancy until she arrived at the age of twenty one years, and whereas by a power of attorney dated November 14 1849 and of record in the Clerk’s office of the County Court of Rockbridge, Mary Ramsay, Philander Gamble, Elizabeth Gamble, William Ramsay and William R Buchanan heirs and distributees of the estate of said John Ramsay dec’d, did appoint me John TL Preston their true and lawful attorney, for them and in their manner to manumit and set free the negro Jane above mentioned, which manumission was to take place when she should be twenty one years of age, and whereas, she is now more than twenty one years of age, and calls upon me to execute said act of manumission. Therefore, know all men by these presents that I John TL Preston do hereby and by manumission in open court and acting for myself with reference to any legal right accruing to me by virtue of my long and uninterrupted possession of the said Jane and for all the heirs and distributees above mentioned of John Ramsay dec’d by virtue of the power invested in me by the power of attorney aforesaid do manumit and set free the said Negro woman Jane Ann Boling. Given under my hand & seal this 5th day of October 1857.
