Know all men by these presents that I Louisa P. Baxter of the town of Lexington in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia from motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery and do hereby manumit and set free from slavery my negro man named London, aged thirty one years. And I do hereby give, grant and release unto the said London all my right, title and claim of, in and to his personal labor and services and of, in and to all the estate and property which he may hereafter acquire or obtain. Which said negro man formerly belonged to the estate of George A. Baxter dec’d and by a decree of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery the County of Rockbridge was assigned to Lavinia Baxter, Nancy Baxter, and Elizabeth Baxter and the said Louisa P. Baxter, and the said Louisa P. Baxter has since the date of said decree purchased from her [illegible] to wit, the said Lavinia Baxter, Nancy Baxter and Elizabeth Baxter all their right and title to said negro man named London means where of the said Louisa P. Baxter to become the sole and exclusive owner of said negro man. In testimony whereof the said Louisa P. Baxter have hereunto set my hand and seal this 31st day of December 1856.

I Charles Varner a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Rockbridge in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that Louisa P. Baxter whose name is signed to the writing hereto annexed bearing date on the 31st day December 1856 personally appeared before me in my County aforesaid and acknowledged said writing to be her act and deed.
Witness my hand this 31st day of December 1856.

This deed of emancipation from Louisa P. Baxter to her slave London was this day produced to me, with the annexed certificate of its acknowledgment and admitted to record.
