Know all men by these presents that I Thomas L Paxton attorney in fact for David R. Edley in pursuance of authority vested in me, by the annexed letters of attorney have manumitted, emancipated and set free a negro woman slaved named Martha Brown wife of Moses Brown for the purpose of enabling her to accompany her husband to Liberia in Africa. And I hereby declare her the said Martha to be entirely liberated from slavery for the purpose aforesaid. She the said Martha Brown hereby emancipated is a woman of dark mulatto complexion about five feet & an inch high and about thirty two years old. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this first day of May A.D. Eighteen hundred and fifty five.
