Know all men by these presents that I John M. Stuart of Rockbridge County Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred & seventy five dollars to me in hand paid & in consideration of the intentions of Moses Brown, herein after named to remove to Liberia, have this day manumitted, emancipated, & set free & by these presents do manumit, emancipate & set free a dark mulatto man slave named Moses Brown, aged 37 years and I hereby declare the said Moses Brown to be entirely liberated from slavery & entitled to all the rights & privileges of a free person, with which it is in my power to vest him.

He the said, Moses Brown is a son of Edmund Brown, who has lately been emancipated & removed to Liberia, is about five feet nine & a half inches high, and was 37 years old on the 3rd day of May last. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 6th day of November 1854.
