To all to whom it may concern. Be it known that we Alexander B. Stuart, John M. Stuart & Samuel Wilson of Rockbridge Virgina, Elizabeth McCluer of Botetourt County, Virginia, heirs & legatees of Robt Stuart dec’d for divers good causes, us hereunto moving, & in consideration of one dollar, to us, in hand paid, have released from slavery, liberated & set free, and by these presents do release from slavery, liberate, manumit & set free, our mulatto man named Edmond, aged about fifty four, lately the property of the estate of the said Robert Stuart deceased; and we do hereby declare the said mulatto man, to be henceforth free, manumitted & forever discharged from all manner of servitude or service to us, the owners of said slave, or to our executors or administrators. Witness our hands & seals, this 7th day of Nov. 1853.

Rockbridge County, State of Virginia to wit,
I M Stickler a Justice of the Peace for the county of Rockbridge, aforesaid, in the state of Virginia, do certify that Alexander B. Stuart, John M. Stuart, & Samuel Wilson whose names are signed to the writing above bearing date, on the 7th date of November 1853, have acknowledged the same before me, in my county aforesaid. Given under my hand this 6th day of December 1853.

I, M W Pettigrew, a Justice of the Peace for the County of Botetourt, aforesaid, in the State of Virginia, do certify that Elizabeth McCluer, whose name is signed to the writing above, bearing date on the 7th day of November 1853, has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid. Given under my hand the [illegible] day of December 1853.

This deed of emancipation from the heirs and legatees of Robert Stuart deceased to their slave Edmond was this day produced to me with the annexed certificates of its acknowledgement and admitted to record.

The following certificates are appended to the foregoing deed of emancipation November 7th 1853
The undersigned would respectfully state to the public that Edmond a enslaved man belonging to the estate of Robert Stuart dec’d by the unanimous consent of his legatees, has been set at liberty for the purpose of going to Liberia. Edmond is believed to be a man of good character and as such is recommended to a Christian public.
