Know all men by these presents that I James Bolin, a free man of color of Lexington Virginia, from motives of parintal [sic] affection, have manumitted & set free from slavery & do hereby manumit & set free from slavery, my daughter Elvira Cooper a mulatto woman, aged twenty six, together with her children, four in number to wit, Frank, aged five years – John, aged three years & six months- Martha, aged two years & Ellen aged eleven months. And I do hereby give, grant & release unto the said Elvira & her children as aforesaid, & all her future increase, all my right, title & claim of, in, & to her person, labour & services, & to the persons, labor & services of her children as aforesaid & of, in & to all the estate & property, which she or they may hereafter acquire. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 1st day of October 1852.
