Know all men by these presents that I Hugh Adams of the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia have this day manumitted and set at liberty and by these presents do manumit and set at liberty my negro man slave Joseph and I do hereby release all claim or authority over the said Joseph and invest him with as full and perfect liberty and freedom to act and do for himself as the laws of this state will permit. The said Joseph was born on the 1st of November 1811 and is now in his thirty seventh year, he is something over six feet high, is of a mulatto color, stout built and well found. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 15th day of August in the year eighteen hundred and forty eight.
