Know all men by these presents that I John A Cumings of the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, from motives of benevolence to allow my negro man John Lymus to emigrate to Liberia and for the further consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by the said John Lymus, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have manumitted and set free from slavery, and do by these presents manumit and set free my negro man named John Lymus, a mulatto aged twenty six years. And I do hereby give, grant, and release the said John Lymus all my right, title and claim of, in, and to his person, labour and services, and services and all right, title and claim or demand whatsoever of my executors or administrators of, in, and to the said negro John Lymus, and of, in and to all the estate and property which he may hereafter acquire or obtain. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this the twentieth day of November in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty nine.
