Know all men by these presents that we Mason Mathews, Thomas Mathews, Ann Weird, Elizabeth Mathews of the County of Greenbrier and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents, do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Reuben alias Reuben James, who was devised to me by the last will & testament of James Wm. Mathews dec’d of record in the clerk’s office of Rockbridge County and do hereby declare him the said Reuben sometimes called Reuben James to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person, with which it is in our power to vest him. He the said Reuben hereby emancipated is a man of a dark yellow complexion about five feet six and seven inches high. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals this 31st day of August in the year of our Lord 1849.

Greenbrier County to wit
We Thomas C Burnell and John Winthrow Justices of the peace in the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia, do hereby certify that Mason Mathews, Ann Weird and Elizabeth Mathews, parties to the above deed of emancipation bearing date August 31st 1849 personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed, and desired us to certify the said acknowledgement, to the clerk of the county court of Rockbridge County in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 31st day of August, 1849.

We James Evans and C.W. Purcell Justices of the peace for the city aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do herby certify that Thomas Mathews, a party to the above deed of emancipation hereto attached, bearing date the 31st of August 1849, personally appeared before us in our city aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed, and desired us to certify the said acknowledgement, to the clerk of the county court of Rockbridge County in order that the said deed may be recorded.
