Know all men by these presents that I James Stuart of the county of Rockbridge have manumitted and set free, and by these presents, do manumit, emancipate and set free a mulatto man slave named Archy alias Archy Stuart also his wife named Fanny and their two daughters named Sally and Martha Jane Stuart. I do hereby declare them the said Archy, his wife Fanny and their two daughters Sally and Martha Jane to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of free persons with which it is in my power to vest them the said Archy, Fanny and Sally and Martha Jane. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this 31st day of August 1846.
