Know all men by these presents, that I Stuart Taylor of Rockbridge County State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Hiram who calls himself Hiram Wade, now about thirty years old, upon the express condition that he the said Hiram Wade shall emigrate to the colony of Liberia in Africa and I do hereby declare him the said Hiram to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person (upon said condition) with which it is in my power to vest him he the said Hiram Wade hereby emancipated is a man of rather light negro complexion about five feet six inches high, has a scar on the right wrist, about six inches from the hand. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this twenty eight day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty four.
