Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Cunningham of the county of Rockbridge have manumitted emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit emancipate & set free a negro woman slave named Malinda & sometimes called Malinda Cunningham who was recently purchased by me of the heirs, distributees & representatives of John Wilson dec’d and I declare her the said Malinda to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights & privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest her. She the said Malinda hereby emancipated is a woman of a dark complexion about five feet high and is in the thirty eighty year of her age. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal on this 19th day of February 1842.
