Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I William H Letcher of the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit emancipate and set free a negro woman a negro woman slave named Rose aged about thirty five years of a bright negro complexion five feet inches high. Also a child of said negro woman named Scilla aged three years part of a complexion like her mother. And I hereby declare them the said Rose and Scilla to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of free persons with which it is in my power to vest them. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this ninth day of May in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty one.
