Know all men by these presents that we Andrew Hays & James CC Hays both of the County of Rockbridge & State of Virginia for & in consideration of the many services rendered by Joe, a negro man slave the property of him the said Andrew & him the JCC Hays Do hereby emancipate and forever set free him the said Joe & do by these presents forever warrant & defend him free from the claim themselves & their heirs and all every other person or persons whatsoever- In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands & seals this 22nd day of October in the year of our Lord 1817.
