Know all men by these presents that I James McFarland of the county of Rockbridge & state of Virginia being desirous to emancipate a certain negro man slave called David generally known by the name of David Adams & my own property, do, by these presents, for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators renounce & relinquish all right, title interest & property in and to the aforesaid slave, and forever quit claim both as to myself and all other persons, to any further services, from the said David; and do declare him to be no longer a slave either to myself or any other person; but forever after this time by my agreement, approbation & consent to be fully & completely emancipated and to enjoy all the liberties immunities, rights & privileges of a free man. Given under my hand and seal this second day of July & in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred five.
