Text of Freedom Document

Whereas my late husband Capt. Charles Taylor of the County of Montgomery and State of Virginia did by his last will & testament bequeath unto me certain slaves for and during the term of my life and by a certain instrument of writing which was to be taken in connection with his said last will and testament, he emancipated and set free the said slaves at my death. And as I do not wish a certain portion of said slaves to remain any longer in servitude, I do hereby emancipate and set free Sam, John, Juliet Taylor, Stuart Crockett, Rhoda, Mary and Amanda. And I do hereby declare them to be free from and after the date of these presents. And I do relinquish all right to their services forever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of September 1846.
