Text of Freedom Document

Where Nancy M. Delzell by her last will and testament, dated the 6th day of February in the year 1844, and duly admitted to record in the Clerk’s Office of the County Court of Botetourt did bequeath a negro girl named Nancy Howlett, to her me the Mary Delzell, for and during the natural life of the said Mary Delzell, and at her death the said slave Nancy Howlett to go to, and be the property of Matilda Shue, wife of Daniel. There, for and during the natural life of the said Matilda Shue, and at the death of the said Matilda Shue, the said Nancy Howlett (if living at the time of the said Matilda Shue’s death) was to be free. And whereas the said Mary Delzell has since departed this life, and the said slave Nancy Howlett has become the property of the said Matilda Shue; and the said Matilda Shue with the knowledge and consent of her husband, Daniel Shue, is desirous that the said Nancy Howlett should be emancipated. Therefore, know all men by these presents that we Daniel Shue and Matilda Shue, of the county of Botetourt and state of Virginia, for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid, but more particularly from motives of benevolence, have manumitted and set free from slavery, the said negro woman slave named Nancy Howlett aged about thirty five years. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals this 8th day of October in the year 1850.
