Know all men by these presents that we Samuel Moomaw, Daniel Kinzie, George Layman, Peter Nininger, Charles Carney, John Gish, Catharine Sperry, Jacob Gish, James Snider heirs and distributes of Jacob Gish dec’d of the County of Botetourt and State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated, and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Spencer and sometimes called Spencer Minor who was formerly the property of Jacob Gish dec’d and was devised to us by his last will and testament; and we hereby declare him the said Spencer to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in our power to vest him. He the said Spencer hereby emancipated is a man of bright complexion about five feet nine inches high and is about forty-one years old.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals this 31st day of October in the year 1844.

Botetourt County to wit:
We Nathan P. Suck and John W. Thompson Justices of the Peace in and for the County of Botetourt and State of Virginia do hereby certify that Peter Nininger, Samuel Moomaw, Daniel Kinzie, George Layman, Jacob Gish, Catharine Sperry parties to a certain deed of emancipation bearing date on the 31st day of October 1844, and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their act & deed and desires us to certify said acknowledge to the Clerk of Botetourt County Court in order that the same may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 31st day of October 1844.

Botetourt County to wit:
We James McDowell & George McDonald Justices of the Peace for the aforesaid county & state of Virginia do hereby certify that James Snider and John Gish parties to a certain deed of emancipation bearing date the 31st day of October 1844 and hereto annexed, personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed and desires us to certify said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Botetourt in order that said deed may be recorded. Roanoke County to wit:
We W.M. Peyton and John P. Kizer Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid & State of Virginia do hereby certify that Charles Carney party to a deed of emancipation bearing date on the 31st day of October 1844 and hereunto annexed, personally appeared before us in our said Court and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Botetourt in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 27th day of Oct. 1845.
