Know all men by these presents that we Samuel Moomaw, George Layman, Jacob Gish, James Snider, Daniel Kinzie, Charles Carney, Peter Nininger, and Catharine Sperry of the county of Botetourt and State of Virginia heirs and distributes of Jacob Gish dec’d have manumitted and set free and by these presents do manumit, emancipate, and set free a negro man slaved named James, commonly called Jim, who descended to us from the estate of said Jacob Gish dec’d and we hereby declare him the said James to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in our power to vest him. He the said James hereby emancipated is a man of dark complexion about five feet five inches high and about thirty three years of age. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 8th day of February in the year 1845.

Botetourt County to wit:
We Nathan P. Suck and Henry M. Bowyer Justices of the Peace for the County of Botetourt and State of Virginia do hereby certify that Samuel Moomaw, George Layman, Jacob Gish, James Snider, Daniel Kinzie, Peter Nininger, Catharine Sperry parties to a certain deed of emancipation bearing date on the 8th day of February 1845 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed and desired us to certify said acknowledgement to the county Court of Botetourt in order that the same might be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 8th day of February, 1845.

Roanoke County to wit:
We W.M. Peyton and John P. Kizer Justices of the Peace for said county and State of Virginia do hereby certify that Charles Carney a party to a certain deed of emancipation bearing date on the 8th day of February 1845 & hereunto annexed, personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid, and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed & desired us to certify said acknowledgment to the county Court of Botetourt in order that the same might be recorded. Given from under our hands and seals this 27th day of Oct. 1845.

This deed of emancipation with the certificates of acknowledgement thereon written was this day exhibited in said office acknowledged by John Gish, a party thereto, and admitted to record.
